Nick's Pizza Prepares for the Big Game Sunday; Super Bowl Is Among Top Days of the Year

FANWOOD, NJ -- Nick's Pizza is gearing up for one of the busiest days of the year: Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 4, when pizzas and wings will be flying out the door.

The day usually ranks as the third busiest of the year for the pizzeria located at 42 South Martine Ave. in Fanwood. (Many pizza delivery businesses see their order numbers double as roughly 60 percent of the take-out food ordered on Super Bowl Sunday is pizza.)

"The calls start in the morning and continue until about half-time, when we can finally take a breather," said Rob Watterson, owner of Nick's. "We'll definitely have some extra staff to help handle the increased volume."

For those who order their Super Bowl catering in advance, Nicks is offering 10% off orders of $50 or more and 20% off $150 or more if placed before Saturday at Noon. Large Plain Pizzas will be $12.99, while Large Specialty pies ranger from $18.99 to $22.99. Food orders can be placed and paid for online at

Sandwich platters (25 two-inch pieces w/ toothpicks) sell for $40, and specialty sandwich platters are priced at $50. Three-foot subs (about 20 two-inch pieces on Italian bread) are $55, while six-foot subs are $100 (about 35 two-inch pieces on Italian bread). Salads (tossed and Caesar) are $18 for a half-tray and $30 for a full-tray. Nick's is also featuring a Sloppy Joe Platter (rye bread with turkey, ham, Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing) for $55.

In addition to pizza, Nick's specializes in chicken wings that come plain and with sauces including barbecue, spicy, and General Tso’s). A bucket of 24 wings sells for $18.99; half-trays (serves 5-8) are $35, while a full tray (serves 15-20) are $70.

The National Chicken Council (NCC) this week released its annual Chicken Wing Report predicting Americans’ consumption of wings on Super Bowl Sunday. NCC’s 2018 report projects that fans will eat 1.35 billion wings during Super Bowl weekend, an all-time high, as the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots battle for the Lombardi Trophy. The figure is up 1.5% (20 million wings), from 2017.

Fun Facts About Chicken Wings

  • If 1.35 billion wings were laid end to end along I-95, they would stretch from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. almost 250 times.
  • That is enough wings to put 625 wings on every seat in all 32 NFL stadiums.
  • 1.35 billion wings is enough to circle the Earth three times.
  • That’s 394 million feet of chicken wings – enough that a chicken could cross the road 13 million times.
  • Americans will eat 20 million more wings this year. If wings were dollars, that would only buy us 2 minutes of commercials during the big game.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
