According to news articles by outlets such as the Washington Post, Huffington Post, and Fox News, on Friday, June 14, 2019, President Trump was speaking on Fox News about House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Trump said, “I call her Nervous Nancy. She’s a nervous wreck.”
This struck me, because people who are nervous should never be made fun of. No one should be happy about, or use to their advantage, that someone else is a "nervous wreck". If anything, we should be compassionate, have empathy, and encourage people who get very nervous, to seek help.
I know, and know of, people who have anxiety flair-ups, in which they feel like a nervous wreck for a period of time, whether it be for only 10 minutes or all night. During this time, depending upon the person, they might become very afraid, as well as suspicious, worried, and have racing thoughts, and be disoriented to some degree.
If someone is nervous or anxious at times, this is not something that should turn into teasing or name calling in order for the person making the comments to feel superior. In fact, we should want to help the person, help them heal, and tell them they are "not alone", as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Union County chapter does. Whether Nancy Pelosi is nervous at times is not the point. Trump's comment is insensitive to anyone with nervousness or mental illness. It is the exact opposite of the direction we are called to go in when we know someone with mental illness or anxiety issues.
I have not given up on President Trump. I believe in respecting him, and, although I disagree with him, I believe that the American people can guide him in the right direction. I would not vote for him, but I feel we need to give him respect, and convince him, in turn, to also respect all people. I am disappointed in some of his actions, and I believe that instead of turning completely against him, we the people should have confidence, that as hard as it can be, he can change. In fact, we should urge him to change. I believe that America is best when we work together, with love, as sisters and brothers.
