GARWOOD, NJ – Colorful. Motivational. Inspired. These are words that describe a workout experience at Fitness, Inc. in Garwood.  Tucked away in the corner of a narrow shopping center lies a highly personalized work-out experience guided by true fitness professionals.

“It’s the wild, wild west of personal training out there,” Shane Condron said, referring to the confusing myriad of choices of personal trainers in the market today. “Some people got their license to be a personal trainer after a single weekend course. People need to be careful who they are working with and ask question about trainers’ degrees and experiences.”

Shane Condron and his wife Katie Condron are the creative force and fitness gurus behind Fitness, Inc. The pair met at Rutgers University while earning their degrees in Exercise Science and Sports Studies. They worked together at a local gym before deciding to open their own studio in February 2012. They work side-by-side, creating success for their clients. Because of their educational background, the couple approach personal training from a very scientific perspective.

“We start with a functional movement screening,” Shane Condron said. “We look at how a person moves, their flexibility, their stability and their strength.”

Using that assessment, the trainers develop a goal-oriented program that factors in range of motion, strengths and weaknesses.

“You have to move well before you move a lot,” Katie Condron said.

Fitness Inc. clients can choose individualized, semi-private or small group training sessions.  The most popular choice for clients is the small group training.

“One of the benefits of working in a small group is the camaraderie,” Shane  Condron said. “Small groups provide support and motivation. People have more of a sense of obligation to come when they are working in a group.  They can’t mentally punch out.”

A unique feature to the Fitness Inc. small group training is the ongoing personalized attention.

“It’s not the same workout for everybody in the group,” Shane Condron said. “While the group is working out at the same time, each individual is getting individualized attention and the workout that’s best for them.”  “We are not just standing there counting reps for our clients.”

The couple stressed that age and physical condition should not dissuade a person from beginning a fitness plan.  They work with people of all ages and have seen success with older clients who entered the program  thinking they could not get results. "These are sometimes my favorite success stories." Katie Condron said.

She likes to tell the story of one client, now in her 50s, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her teens.

“She’s been coming twice a week for four years. She’s more functional in her daily life now, and her quality of life has really improved,” Katie Condron said.  “And she does great squats and dead lifts now too,” her husband added.

“Everybody is coming here for a reason,” Shane Condron said. “We will find the weakness and help them improve. We’re very mindful of the results that people get, it doesn’t matter where they start. Even the best athletes have limiting factors; we can take them to the next level.”

Shane Condron also points to the importance of nutrition in any work-out plan. Along with his other professional training and skills, he is also certified nutrition coach.  Clients can add nutritional coaching to their routine and see more comprehensive results.

“We like to start by having people add more good things every day, until the good things push the bad stuff out,” Shane Condron said. “It’s about building healthy lifestyle habits, making better choices, setting one to two goals at a time to work on.”

The Condrons have created a bright, spacious studio in their Garwood location.  State of the art equipment lines the walls waiting for the perfect combination of client and trainer to interact and make results happen.

“Everyone spends their time going between two places: work and home," Shane Condron said. "We want Fitness Inc to be the third stop in our clients’ lives.”

What Is Your Bottom Line?

This week's Parshah (Torah reading) is the Parshah of Pinchas the Zealot: the courageous young priest who stood up against idolatry and immorality and, in the end, saved Israel from a devastating plague.

While Pinchas' radical response made him a hero worthy of having a Torah section named after him, we wouldn't necessarily suggest to our children ...
