SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ – In a contest that was decided in the final seconds of the game, the senior girls defeated the juniors 6-0 to win the 10th Annual DECA Powder Puff Game at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School while raising money for charity.
Reigning MVP Sophie Brause scored the game’s winning and only touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter on a scramble into the end zone as she was chased down by several juniors.
“It’s great to see them play,” said Margie Fitzgibbon, DECA Advisor. “It’s really a lot of fun. We get a lot of support to do this and I think that it important because you’re putting something fun for the kids to do, it’s a team building exercise and you get to raise money for charity.”
The girls raised nearly $500 for New Eyes for the Needy, a non-profit organization that provides eyeglasses to underprivileged people in need.
“We were really lucky this year; Nick’s Pizza and Rocko’s Ice Cream volunteered to help us sponsor the shirts and they played a big role in the fundraising efforts,” added Fitzgibbon, a business education teacher at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. “If we didn’t get the sponsorship from them, we wouldn’t have been able to meet our fundraising goal.”
