Pizza and Poetry - Nick's Thinks Outside The Box

FANWOOD, NJ -- For the second year in a row, Nick's Pizza has teamed up with Park Middle School and will feature over 300 original poems written by 7th grade students taped to the outside of its pizza boxes on Friday, April 27.

The pairing of pizza and poetry was the idea of Alexandra Hanner, a writing teacher at Park Middle School. It proved to be a big hit with both the students and with Nick's customers who enjoyed having their pizzas delivered with a topping of poetry.

"I thought this would be a great way to give the students an authentic audience for their writing," said Hanner. "It is a great way to promote literacy in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood community."

Mrs. Hanner is asking all who participate in social media to post their pizza poetry using the hashtag #ParkPizzaPoetry in an effort to promote the initiative and help students find their poems.

"Pizza & Poems has now become a tradition we are very proud of," said Rob Watterson of Nick's Pizza. "We can’t thank Ms. Hanner enough for including us in such a cool idea." is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily paper.
