SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- A single-car accident involving a 10-wheel FedEx truck and an electric pole temporarily closed Union Ave., a small connecting road from Route 22 West to New Providence Road on Friday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. It is unclear if the driver hit the pole or if the pole fell due to weather-related conditions.

When the Scotch Plains Police responded to the call, power lines were dangling all over the vehicle with the driver seated in his vehicle.

"We instructed the driver to stay inside, until the power was cut off," explained Scotch Plains Police Chief Ted Conley. "When I left the scene everyone was safe and secure."

Neighboring businesses including McDonald's, T-Mobile and Subway temporarily lost power as a result of the accident.

The Scotch Plains Fire Department and Rescue Squad were on standby, but not needed to be dispatched. The truck was towed from the scene. There were no injuries to report.

As of 6 p.m., McDonald's was still out of power. The other neighboring stores' power had been restored.
