SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - At a scheduled council business meeting on Tuesday, March 18, the Scotch Plains Council discussed the 2014 budget for the Scotch Plains Public Library.

Representatives of the library, which has more than 20,000 active card holders, had requested a budget of $1.36 million, a proposed increase of 12.3% over last year’s $1.2 million figure.

Included in the proposal is the restoration of Sunday hours (noon to 4 PM), which had to be cut from last year’s budget. The Council also asked that the library incorporate an updated budget proposal in the near future to account for the full restoration of Monday hours, which currently operates from 1 PM to 9 PM.

“When the library is effectively funded, we see more use and more activity,” said Jeffrey Noonan, President of the Public Library Board of Trustees. “The library is closed more often now than it was before.”

According to the budget proposal, $73,185.67 will be allocated to books and publications, which represents half of what was utilized in 2010. Trustees will supplement with State Aid and Trustee fine money to extend its services.

The largest portion of the library’s requested budget is represented in the salary expense of $691,658.33, and is expected to incorporate more than half of the budget. The library has eight full-time employees.
