SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Hundreds of local residents braved the hot, muggy weather on Wednesday evening to participate in the Unity for a Cause 5K and Family 1-mile walk/run. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA Council partnered for the annual race in a combined effort to celebrate and provide opportunities for health and wellness within the Scotch Plains-Fanwood community.

Proceeds from “United for a Cause” will benefit Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA Council Health and Wellness Scholarship and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

LIVESTRONG at the Y is a 12-week physical activity program free to members of our community recovering from cancer. The program enables the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA to offer participants educational seminars, childcare assistance and services for financial management. These activities help recovering cancer survivors “get their lives back” physically, mentally and spiritually.

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Personally, I don’t think that we have any apologies to make for this phenomenon. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
