FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Borough of Fanwood and the Township of Scotch Plains hosted the annual Memorial Day Concert in the shadows of the historic Fanwood train station building on Sunday evening.

A Tribute to Fallen Heroes, performed by the Westfield Community Concert Band, featured the national anthem and patriotic songs including God Bless America, The Stars and Stripes Forever, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. A highlight of the performance was the Armed Forces medley featuring the anthems of each branch of the United States military: Army (The Caissons Go Rolling Along), Navy (Anchors Aweigh), Air Force (The Wild Blue Yonder), Marines (The Marine Hymn, aka From the Halls of Montezuma) and Coast Guard (Semper Paratus, aka Always Ready). The program also included the reading of letters from soldiers on the front lines and their families.

Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith welcomed the crowd. Rabbi Joel Abraham of Temple Shalom gave the invocation, and Vietnam veteran Joe McCourt, a member of the Memorial Day Parade Committee, served as emcee. The program also recognized Konstantine Zoganas, Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps, Operation Iraqi Freedom, who will serve as the grand marshal of the 2018 Memorial Day Parade.
