SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Members of the Gala Committee of Literacy Volunteers of Union County met at the home of Gene and Marilyn Evangelista of Scotch Plains for their June meeting. The Gala Committee of Literacy Volunteers meets monthly to discuss gala events for the Literacy Volunteers of Union County, including their upcoming event on November 2nd at the Schackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains. The event will include a number of honorees: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz, Emmy Award-winning journalist Byron Pitts of CBS “60 Minutes,” and Goya Foods.

The Literacy Volunteers of Union County matches certified tutors with adult learners in need of basic literacy or English as a Second Language assistance. Tutors teach reading, writing and verbal skills to improve the overall quality of life of learners. It is a nonprofit association.

“I am very proud to work with such a dedicated group of volunteers, who are compassionate and committed,” says Arlene Klemow, Developmental Director of the organization.
