SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Downtown Redevelopment Committee (SPDRC) will hold an agenda meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building's Council Chambers.
Among the topics will be:
- RFQ/RFP Proposals for Tier 1, Phase 1 Section of Downtown
- Transit Village Discussion Update
- Jade Isle Update
- Snuffy’s-Lidl Redevelopment Plan
According to downtown redevelopment coordinator Tom Strowe, the German grocery chain Lidl has targeted Snuffy's as a future location. If the store were to open at the location of Snuffy's, the venerable catering hall on the corner of Mountain Ave. and Park Ave., it would mark the arrival of a the first true grocery store since the Shop Rite at 377 Park Ave. closed decades ago.
Lidl offers "High quality, low prices, and hassle-free shopping that gets you in and out," according to the grocery chain's website. Lidl claims it is "revolutionizing grocery shopping" with "a less complicated process that allows us to simply deliver low prices, high quality, and the best shopping experience for our customers."
Most of the products at the store are Lidl's own private label; which accounts for roughly 90% of its inventory. The company started branching outside of Germany in the 1990s, and within a few years, we expanded all across Europe. Today, it operates over 10,500 stores in 29 countries and recently expanded into the United States, according to the company's website.
