Scotch Plains Driver Arrested After Downtown Westfield Crash Involving NJ Transit Bus

WESTFIELD, NJ — The driver who hit three vehicles, including an NJ Transit bus, as well as a traffic signal on Elm Street in Downtown Westfield Monday evening was arrested for driving while impaired, according to the police report.

In addition to DWI, Robert Ventura, 57, of Scotch Plains was also issued summonses for delaying traffic, careless driving and improper driving on sidewalk, according to the report.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. when Ventura, driving a Honda Element, failed to stop at the red light at East Broad Street and Elm Street, according to the report. While attempting to make a left turn from Broad onto Elm, he hit the bus, which was occupied only by the driver, the report says.

According to the report, Ventura then tried to drive off, which is when he struck the traffic signal on the Northeast corner of Elm and Broad for the first time. He then backed up and tried to turn left on Elm, hitting another vehicle, it says, and when he backed up after hitting that vehicle, he hit the light signal again.

Ventura then drove forward attempting to flee northbound on Elm Street and struck a third vehicle, the report says, where he finally stopped.

After his arrest, Ventura was processed and released to a sober responsible adult, according to the police blotter.
