SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The SPFBL 10U White team finished the weekend going 4-0 including an 8-0 victory in the 3rd Annual Raiders Classic Memorial Day Tournament finals over the Westfield Blue Devils.
For the tournament Jack Sponheimer was 7 for 11 with 5 RBI and a two scoreless on the mound. AJ Saccento contributed with 8 RBI's over the weekend. The entire roster contributed for the team during the Memorial Day tournament.
On the mound, for the weekend the Raiders surrendered just two earned runs while using eight different pitchers. The coaches have put a major focus on throwing strikes and making defensive plays behind the pitcher.
"10U is a fun age to play and coach - as the kids are starting to outgrow the 46/60 field making the routine defensive plays are all that more important," said Coach Chris Bates.
"The team moved to 12-0 during their spring season and more importantly we continue to see player development up and down the roster. As the kids are moving into what I consider Phase 2 of their Youth baseball days (10U to 12U), it is important that we focus on the fundamentals so that becomes a backbone of their abilities and we strive to increase their Baseball IQ."
"On this team and our league, we are focusing on player accountability - especially as the kids get older," Bates added. "The players should carry their baseball bag to and from the parking lot, the players should know what their job as a hitter is when the team has a runner on 2nd and no outs, the player should know as a base runner when to advance in a certain scenario. Regardless of where they are today, we are working to get them to be the best they can going forward. It is a fun process to watch."
