SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ – Summer vacation is going to be longer than usual for children in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood school district.

In a unanimous decision, the Board of Education voted during Thursday’s public meeting to approve a Tuesday, Sept. 8th start date for the 2015-16 school year. The board carefully weighed the option of starting the school year on Thursday, Sept. 3 (Draft A) before deciding on the latter (Draft B).

The decision to choose starting school later was based on "the overwhelming amount of support that superintendent Dr. Margaret Hayes received from the public," according to assistant superintendent Dr. Joan Mast, who spoke on Dr. Hayes’ behalf at the meeting.

The last day of school next year is scheduled for Wednesday, June 22, just one day later than Draft A’s proposed schedule, despite starting five days later.
