Señora Lipton’s fourth grade Spanish students from School One and Evergreen School passed customs and boarded a simulated flight to Cancun on AeroMexico last week. The comprehensive Spanish-speaking activity virtually teleported students from a school gymnasium to a fully-functional airport.

El Aeropuerto Evergreen, the full-service airport featured a check-in counter, immigration services, baggage claim, customs, and a commercial airplane.  Airline employees were represented by Spanish students from Señora Clark’s Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School class.

After “takeoff,” the students enjoyed an in-flight educational video about Mexico and enjoyed some snacks.  When the travelers arrived in Cancun, they were prompted by immigration services to answer questions in Spanish before they could advance to the next checkpoint.  When the students completed their exams, they were greeted by high school students shaking maracas and Mexican music.  At the conclusion, students did the Mexican Hat Dance and enjoyed tortilla chips and salsa.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for students to apply their studies to a real-life learning experience,” said Lipton, who has made the simulated Spanish-speaking airline an annual event for the last six years.  For some students, this is their first experience flying, so that in itself excites them.

The setup was staged by Señora Lipton, who sacrificed many extra hours from her schedule to make it happen. Visual donations came from AeroMexico.

The Missing Moses

A seemingly dubious distinction belongs to this week’s Parshah, Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20–30:10). It is the only reading in the Torah — from the first Parshah of the book of Exodus (in which he is born) until the end of the book of Numbers — where the name of Moses is not mentioned. Tetzaveh’s opening words are V’atah ...
