UNION, NJ -- Two Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School baseball players will be featured on the diamond for the 7th Annual Essex-Union Underclassmen All-Star Game on Monday, June 20.
In addition to SPFHS varsity head coach Joe Higgins, juniors Matt Fox and Peter Yarem will be included in this year’s game after both completing sensation seasons.
Yarem, a catcher on the varsity team since his freshman year, used his stick and defense to provide the Raiders with an essential piece of their team behind the plate. Yarem led the team in runs and triples and was second in stolen bases while recording an on-base-percentage of .404.
Fox, who switched positions and started at first base for the entire year, proved to be the catalyst of the SPFHS offense. Fox was tied first on the team with 19 RBIs and hit .388 while reaching base .479 percent of the time.
Taking a role as an assistant coach for the game, Higgins had another successful campaign as the manager for SPFHS. Higgins coached his team to a 17-12 record and got the team within a game of becoming Union County Champions in his second season.
One Raider who will not be attending the game will be junior Peter Warren. Although chosen to play, Warren declined the offer due to being selected to represent New Jersey in the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference at the Newseum in Washington D.C. Warren led the team in runs and hit three home runs, which also led the team.
The Underclassmen All-Star game will be played at Kean University, with first pitch scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
