SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Battle of the Bands, an annual Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School benefit concert, will be happening tonight, with proceeds going towards Charity: Water. The event was organized by seniors Joey Guidi and Tyler Litwin who are excited for an evening full of food, comedy, and, of course, music.

The two seniors, who play in the Moonglowers together, held an interest meeting at the beginning of the year, reached out to sponsors, recruited bands, and decided on the cause.

Explaining why they chose Charity:Water, an organization that helps provide sustainable sources of water, Litwin said, “They help a main basic human need all around the world and the cool thing is after we donate all the money we’ll actually be able to see what project we helped to fund.”

Five bands are competing for the top award, with solo acts performing in between. “Needless to say, we have some awesome music,” declared Guidi.

There will be pizza for sale provided by Nick’s Pizza, and raffle prizes from Fanwood Bagel. The hope is to raise enough money to give the winning band some sort of cash prize while donating the rest to the charity organization.

Last year’s concert was orchestrated by Joe Colella and Elise Mann who passed on the responsibility to Litwin, Guidi, and Nathan Graham who also contributed. Raymond Moskal, advisor of Raider News, was the supervisor of the event and helped them with logistics, like booking the space.

List of bands performing:

  • Double Replacement
  • Dudeglowers
  • Free Range Tofu
  • Indigo & the Ghost
  • Speechless

The event is tonight at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets will be $5 at the door.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.

April 21, 2018

Dear Editor:

After Bruce Patterson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County Freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting Freeholder, I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered.

At the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.

After ten years of following government in Union ...
