SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls basketball coach Ryan McKenna says they were a very inexperienced team last year but were still able to make some noise by clinching a berth in the state tournament. Given the experience of the team, he expects this year to be a year of growth for the program.

“We were a very inexperienced team last year with only two players playing on varsity the year before. We really grew as a team last year culminating in a state tournament appearance. This year I expect us to make great strides with the experience that we have,” said McKenna

With their entire roster returning and an additional three more players, freshman Amanda Baylock is expected to join the team this year along with Dayton transfer Gabby Palermo and senior Emily Muench first time this year after returning from an injury.

Coach McKenna tells TAPintoSPF that sophomore Ali Murphy and juniors Ashley DeFrancesco and Emily Friscia are expected to be leading scorers for the girls this year with Ryann Wall a four-year varsity player and three-year starter leading the team in the assist category. Maddie Starosa, who battled numerous injuries last year is the team’s perimeter shooter and led the team in three-pointers last year. McKenna lists Julia DeVizio, Carly Walker and Ciara Worthey as some other round out our group of experienced seniors.

Looking forward to a strong season, McKenna says that they are making sure they are doing the right things on and off the court to give themselves the best chance at success. The uncertainty that comes with having a season during the pandemic is not slowing these girls down, as they are making the most of every minute they spend on the floor.

“As we are still battling the pandemic the girls are sacrificing a great deal. Given their contact with one another they are severely limiting their contact with others. They wear a mask and distance when possible.” said McKenna. “We won't know how our schedule will change from day to day with cancelations, so we are just going to roll with whatever we can. Of course, we are looking to be successful on the court, but the real success will be in how many games we get to play. We are grateful for any time on the court that we have.”
