American Cancer Society fundraiser Kyle Greco and Team Deutschland have raised more than $100,000 since middle school for the Relay For Life of Scotch Plains. Team Deutschland – a team of 10 graduating seniors from Scotch Plains – stuck together and set strict fundraising standards for any prospective team members. This year alone, the team raised nearly $14,000 toward the event’s $95,000 total.

Kyle’s incredible work ethic and spirit of service was inspired by his mom, Colleen Greco, who battled brain cancer for 23 years before succumbing to the disease in 2016. A lover of Relay For Life, Colleen involved Kyle on her team. But when he was in sixth grade, he wanted to start his own. That year the Relay theme was the Olympics – and his team was named for Germany. The same ten students have been involved since Terrill Road Middle School. This year, Kyle raised more than $5,000 for American Cancer Society research and support programs.

Kyle’s advice to young people, “Set a goal and start young. It’s easy for cute kids to collect money outside of stores (canning). Once you’re 17 or 18 – not so much.”

“One of our most successful initiatives is the Easter egg stuffing. For a fee, our team stuffed and placed eggs for Easter egg hunts at private residences and parties. My co-captain Mike Rinaldi learned about the fundraiser and brought it to Scotch Plains,” said Kyle. “We want to pass on that idea to our neighbors.”

Kyle and his buddies plan to continue fundraising for cancer research when they attend Penn State in the fall. To donate to Team Deutschland and Relay For Life of Scotch Plains, go to relayforlife.org

What Are The Warning Signs of Suicide

The recent passings of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain remind us to take mental illness seriously.

Many of us feel uncomfortable to ask when someone in distress is suicidal for fear we are putting this thought in their minds. This is not true. It is a myth that asking about suicide increases the risk of suicide. The most common mental illness is depression. Some people are ...
