KENILWORTH, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Fanwood PAL football program was honored when the annual New Jersey Suburban Youth Football League dinner was held on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Galloping Hill Golf Club in Kenilworth.
Julia Flowers, who played on the Scotch Plains Fanwood eight grade A team this past season, was one of the six scholarship winners that the league honored. The league consists of teams from 21 communities throughout New Jersey. Julia had grown up playing in the Scotch Plains Fanwood PAL program.
The Scotch Plains Fanwood PAL was also recognized at the league dinner with an award for its dedication and commitment to the newly installed Tip of the Spear. The program teaches and promotes the safety of the sport and clinics for both coaches and players are held during the summer.
The NJSYFL officials awarded the Scotch Plains Fanwood PAL as the league's Program of the Year for its role in supporting the new safety program. Shawn Johnson, the president of the SPF PAL, was presented with the Program of the Year plaque at the dinner. This past season, the SPF PAL won a Super Bowl championship in the fifth grade D level and the sixth grade Raider team was a runner-up int he Super Bowl on the C level.
