FANWOOD, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools and the Union County Vo-Tech Schools will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 9 in anticipation of inclement weather. The National Weather Service predicts, rain, snow, and sleet overnight with snow continuing in the morning.

The Scotch Plains DPW will begin salting early Thursday morning around 3:00 a.m. and plowing will start around 6:00 a.m. and will focus on the main roads first.

  • Route 22 and South Avenue are state routes within the Township limits and are handled by the New Jersey Dept. of Transportation (DOT).
  • Sky Top Drive, Mountain Ave. (from Willow Ave. to Route 22), Willow Ave. (from Mountain Ave. to Route 22), Front Street, North Ave., Park Ave., Martine Ave., Raritan Road (from Lake Ave. to Terrill Road), Terrill Road, and Lamberts Mill Road are County routes within the Township limits and are handled by Union County.
  • The Scotch Plains Department of Public Works is responsible for snow and ice control on municipal streets and municipal parking lots within the Township limits. The Township does not remove snow and ice from private streets or developments and private driveways.

According to the Township's Snow Removal Guidelines, it can take up to 6 hours from the time the plows start on a section to the time they complete the section, depending on on the length of the snow event, the conditions the drivers face, and when the plows were initially sent out. (Cul-de- sacs take longer because of the need to maneuver the trucks around the circle.) Streets with cars parked on them also take longer due to the need for more maneuvering of the plow trucks around those cars. Click here to read all of the guidelines as it relates to the Township's Plan for salting and plowing.
