Scotch Plains-Fanwood Residents Organize Fundraiser for Beloved "Ice Cream Lady" Marta Bado

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Marta Bado was more than just the "Ice Cream Lady" in Scotch Plains and Fanwood, she was a fixture at local children's birthday parties, attended block parties, greeted everyone with a smile and brought cold refreshment and warm fuzzies everywhere she went.

Marta passed suddenly on Saturday, April 15, 2017. She will forever be a part of our children's childhood memories and the song that heralded her arrival on our streets will echo in our minds for many years to come.

Karen Langer and Lisa Rafal are organizing an effort to reach out to the community and unite to help her family. The link is:

"We just want to give back a little bit of what we got from Marta over the years," said Lisa Rafal. "Working with the families of Scotch Plains and Fanwood brought her happiness. She enjoyed being a part of our celebrations, being with our children and becoming friendly with so many of us. We hope to meet (and even exceed) our goal of $5000 to benefit Marta's family."

"Marta was a treasure to our two communities. She loved our children so much and gave them memories that will last forever," added Karen Langer, who is also spearheading the gofundme effort.

Born and raised in Uruguay, Marta is survived by her husband of 40 years, Cesar, her children Federico and Yenny, and her grandchildren Kayla, Michael and Anna.

Every donation will matter, regardless of the amount. If you have any questions, email Karen Langer: or Lisa Rafal: is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily paper. Sign up for our daily eNews and follow us on Facebook and twitter @SPF_TAP.

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
