SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ— After the conclusion of their extremely abbreviated regular season, a handful of young men from the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Wrestling team earned the right to compete in the Regional tournament, for a shot at wrestling in the state tournament.
Junior Robert Lerner, coming in at 195 lbs, won his first match by fall in 1:51 against Juan Santos from Weehawken. He also won his second match by fall in 3:43 against Shane Kanterman from Cranford.
Lerner then lost his semifinal match against Thomas Renna from South Plainfield by fall in 4:19. Undaunted, he returned to form and won his wrestle back match by fall in 1:10 against Jacob Ventura from Pingry. Although he lost in the 3rd place match 3-0 against Shane Kanterman from Cranford, Lerner placed 4th overall and is heading to the state tournament next weekend.
Other Raiders competing in the regional tournament:
- Brandon Bowles, wrestling at 145 lbs., won his first match by beating Zachary Vera from Livingston by fall in 2:53. Bowles then lost his quarterfinal match, 2-1, in sudden victory to Felix Lettini from St. Peters Prep. He was defeated in his wrestle back match, 11-4, by Nick Stampoulous from Brearly. A senior, Bowles has had an outstanding wrestling career as a Raider.
- Anthony Robinson competed at 160 lbs. and lost his first match to Nicholas Sacco from Bridgewater-Raritan by fall in 2:20.
- Ben Root, at 132 lbs. lost his match against Dom Merola from Hanover Park 15-0.
- Larry Shoyoye, at 220 lbs. lost his first match against John Casale from Caldwell 12-2. Larry has had an outstanding career as a Raider wrestler.
Typically held in Atlantic CIty, the 2021 state wrestling championships will be held in Phillipsburg.
