SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Students in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood public school district and their families celebrated National Walk and Bike to School Day Wednesday, Oct. 4. 
Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith and members of the police department greeted students who walked to Coles School, while Scotch Plains Councilman Ted Spera walked to McGinn and Township Manager Al Mirabella stopped by Brunner School. Fanwood Councilman Russ Huegel visited School One.

"Walk to School Day" began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. Last year, more than 5,000 Walk to School Day events took place, according to is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily paper.
