Scotch Plains Honors First Responders at Annual Dinner

GARWOOD, NJ -- Scotch Plains Township held its annual awards dinner honoring its local heroes on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Westwood in Garwood. Police Sgt. Jerry Brown was the Guest of Honor at the awards dinner. 

Honorees included:

  • Deputy Fire Chief Skip Paal (20 years of service)
  • Fire Captain Dennis Hercel Jr. (Above & Beyond)
  • Firefighter Doug Freitag (40 years of service)
  • Firefighter Matt Adams
  • Lori Sternberg (Sternberg Fitness)
  • Ralph Checchio (Checchio Paving & Concrete)

Pictured in the middle is Doug Freitag, who received an award for 40 years of service as a firefighter. He was joined by Mayor Al Smith, Councilman Ted Spera, Fire Chief John Lestarchick, Deputy Chief Skip Paal, and Battalion Chief Joseph Rodrigues.

Update: Health Authorities Still Investigating Flu Death of Elizabeth Schoolgirl

ELIZABETH, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Health is continuing to investigate the cause of the passing of elementary school student Daniela Genaro after it was confirmed that the student had been diagnosed with influenza. Officials said it "presently remains unclear whether or not the virus was the primary contributing factor to the child's passing."
