SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The Jewish Community Center of Central New Jersey was closed for a short time after preschool began there Wednesday morning due to a bomb threat. A bomb squad swept the building for explosives and no bomb was found, according to Lt. Jeff Briel of the Scotch Plains Police Department.

“This is another in a series of bomb threats to JCCs up and down the East Coast,” Briel noted.

The incident began when a worker at the JCC was notified of the threat, he said.

“The employee of the JCC called Union County 911 and they were told to evacuate the building,” he said. “Scotch Plains police assisted with the evacuation. The bomb squad swept, and the building is safe.”

Children and staff were allowed to re-enter the building once the building was deemed safe.

The JCC serves people of all ages and is home to exercise facilities, an art studio, senior programming and an early childhood education center that serves infants through kindergarten.

Sometime before 9:20 a.m., the entrance to the JCC was closed and the building evacuated. Students and their teachers stood outside as dogs from the Sherriff’s K-9 unit arrived.

The building was re-opened at about 10 a.m. and children were returned to their classrooms.
