SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - According to a ranking published by security organization SafeWise, Scotch Plains is one of the 50 safest communities in New Jersey.

Scotch Plains is ranked 33rd. The SafeWise rankings were determined by combining 2011 FBI crime data with other factors, such as unique safety initiatives and security programs, the company said in a release.

A municipality must have a population of at least 15,000 to qualify for the list (Fanwood falls below the prescribed population minimum for inclusion). Among communities with 15,000 residents or more, Scotch Plains ranked as the safest in Union County.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
