SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Police Department has promoted Jeff Briel to the rank of captain. Briel, a lifelong resident of the Township, was sworn in by Mayor Al Smith at Tuesday's Scotch Plains Council meeting.

Briel attended Evergreen Elementary, Park Middle School and Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (class of 1988). He was a Union County Corrections Officer from March 1993 to January 1995 before joining the SPPD. He graduated from the John H. Stamler Police Academy in Scotch Plains in June 1995 and began his career with SPPD as a patrolman.

Later, Briel served in the Detective Bureau from 199 to 2004 and was promoted to Sergeant in June 2004, Lieutenant in March 2012, and Detective Bureau Commander since December 2016.

Capt. Briel's promotion came on his 19th wedding anniversary. However, he joked that he made it up to his wife, Lisa, a few days before by taking her to a Yankee game.
