SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Township of Scotch Plains and the U.S. Census Bureau will be co-hosting a job fair on Monday, Dec. 9, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Scotch Plains Public Library (1927 Bartle Ave.) for people interested in working for the U.S. Census Bureau in 2020.
The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire 64,000 people in the state of New Jersey for a variety of positions. There are field positions and office positions available. The hours are flexible. Salaries in Union County start at $21.00 per hour.
At the job fair and information session, people will be able to learn why the census is important to our community and find out what job opportunities are available. Applications can be completed online and the Scotch Plains Public Library will provide tablets for applicants to use. Applicants can even use their smart phones to apply. Census staff will be available to help with the application process and answer questions.
Once hired, you provide the U.S. Census Bureau with your hours of availability each week and you will only be asked to work during those hours. You are paid for training, as well.
The goal of the 2020 census is to “count everyone once, only once, and in the right place,” according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In September 2019, the Mayor and Township Council established a Complete Count Committee of Scotch Plains community leaders to ensure we get a complete count of residents in Scotch Plains.
Census results determine our federal and state representation as well as critical funding for our community for roads, infrastructure, schools, libraries, and emergency services.
If you cannot attend the job fair but are still interested in working for the Census, you can apply online at www.2020census.gov/jobs.
