SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ -- A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Union County until 9:00 pm EDT.
Q: When is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued?
A: When conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in the watch area. A severe thunderstorm is a storm that produces one inch hail (or larger) in diameter and/or winds that equal or exceed 58 miles an hour. During the watch, people should review safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.
  • Stay indoors, if possible, during the storm
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
