SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Over the past four weeks, Shackamaxon Country Club sponsored a Special Olympics golf training expo for 15 local Special Olympics athletes. Chris Schiavone, the past president of Special Olympics New Jersey and owner of Shackamaxon  Country Club generously offered his facility, along with the golf professionals and the equipment particularly suited for the athletes.

"Our goal was to introduce the athletes to the game of golf, develop an interest and let them enjoy the facility, in the hope that some may develop an interest and skill to stick with the game and enjoy it wherever they care to play," Joe Bush of Shackamaxon.

"I was so pleased that Shackamaxon offered their professional staff and facilities so generously to our kids," said Rich Duthie, who among others, proposed the idea to the golf club. "They all enjoyed the experience immensely, and it is yet another athletic endeavor for our young adults to express themselves. I want to extend a huge thank you to Chris Schiavone, Joe Bush and Jay Orsini for opening the club for our group at no cost to the families."

"It was such a pleasure to get to know this group of fine young men and women from our surrounding towns. I hope they all stick with it and to see even more involvement next year," said Jay Orsini, noting that management team quickly embraced the idea. "We look forward to seeing this program grow over the next few years to the point of entering into the competitions sponsored by Special Olympics New Jersey."
