Dear Neighbors:

I hope that each of you enjoyed your Thanksgiving and that the holiday gave you an opportunity to unplug and unwind. As your friend and neighbor, I would encourage each of you to take another day to relax and to spend this day enjoying your families while avoiding the frenzy of the doorbuster deals.

Instead, join me on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29) when I support our incredible local businesses. Take a minute to see the many treasures at stores like The Last Firefly, Apple Blossom Flower and Candy Shop, and Uptown Vintage, just to name a few.

I will be shopping tomorrow with my friend, Councilwoman-Elect Rose Checchio. We are meeting first at Apple Blossom at 11:00 a.m. From there, we will be visiting several of our unique and surprising shops. We would absolutely love to have you join us for the day.

As you consider the possibility of mall traffic and exhausting lines, please Rose and I are asking you to remember that our unique small businesses are just one more thing that make the communities of Scotch Plains and Fanwood so amazing.

Very truly yours,

Councilwoman Colleen Gialanella

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Personally, I don’t think that we have any apologies to make for this phenomenon. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
