WESTFIELD, NJ — Shovlin Mattress Factory, local makers of premium quality mattresses and beds, celebrated the opening of their pop-up showroom at 109 Quimby St. Sunday night. Owners Ron and Kara Shovlin, who live in Westfield, have a six-month lease in the space, formerly Scott’s Shoes. If all goes well, the store could become permanent, they said.

The couple continues to run their other showroom at the factory location, 35 South Ave. in Fanwood, as well.

“We’ve always wanted to have a store in Downtown Westfield,” Ron Shovlin said. “The foot traffic is amazing. With Christmas coming you could have a thousand people a day.”

The Shovlin family has owned the factory and shop, originally located in Garwood, since the late 1980s. Photos of the old factory line the walls of the Westfield store.

“This store is a bit of an homage to the Garwood location,” Kara Shovlin said. But the vintage photos are the only industrial element here.

“Our showroom in Garwood was very factory style,” Ron Shovlin said. “I don’t think my mother ever envisioned this when she was running it.”

Currently, hours at the Westfield location are Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. Open Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment only. Call 908-322-4178.

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
