WESTFIELD, NJ – If you’ve ever driven down Lamberts Mill Road and waited in traffic to get on to West Broad Street, than you’ve probably noticed an inspirational quote written on a café sign. Teresa Gleason started the sign board to promote her group fitness classes at Happy Hour Fitness and positioned the sign in front of her home at 125 Lamberts Mill Road. But what started as a simple advertising strategy quickly evolved into daily inspiration that commuters and local drivers have embraced.

“Some nights I am up until 3:00 a.m. trying to find the perfect quote. I definitely feel like the right person is meant to see that message,” Gleason said.

Gleason updates the sign almost daily and while her initial objective was to drive business, Gleason was surprised to learn that she was connecting with people in a much more powerful way.

“Christmas was amazing. Letters came in thanking me for the inspiration,” said Gleason. “I feel like I have a fan base and I don’t want to let them down.”

Gleason went on to create dedicated social platforms for her messages. You can follow the signs and quotes on Instagram at @ExerciseOutsideTheBox and on Twitter at @happy_hourfit. The sign has grown beyond the business and is now an entirely separate entity. While she may sometimes add her business website, typically she is focused on the message.

Because inspiration is in such high demand, Gleason has even gone on to organize inspirational series. For example, during the month of May, the inspirational messages were derived from popular songs.

The inspirational quotes and support come as no surprise as Gleason’s take on fitness has a holistic approach.

“People want to work out to lose weight but I also want to make the connection between mental health and fitness,” Gleason said.

Motivated by her late father’s energetic and outgoing personality, Gleason started her fitness and motivational journey because of his influence on her life.

“My father went out of his way to make others feel happy. He lived his life in activities,” she said. “My dad was all about spreading good vibes.”
