SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The late Sister Mary Raymond Alkazin, RSM, who epitomized the values of excellence, respect for learning, service for others, and social justice during her distinguished teaching career, will be inducted into the Union Catholic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Sister Mary Raymond, who entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1941 and led a life of spirituality and compassion, joined the faculty at Union Catholic in 1982. She taught chemistry and created the Union Catholic Environmental Club, which began in the late 1980’s and grew into a nationally recognized environmental program. Under her leadership, UC received a National Tree trust grant and the Environmental Club was recognized as the national recipient of the President’s Environmental Youth Award.

Every Arbor Day, a tree is planted in front of Union Catholic in Sister’s honor.
