ROSELLE PARK, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood pitcher Zoe Cardenas tossed a complete game four-hitter, allowing just one earned run, as the 13th-seeded Raiders upset No. 4 fourth-seeded Roselle Park, 4-1, in the first round win in the Union County softball tournament on Monday. Scotch Plains-Fanwood takes on No. 5 Cranford in a quarterfinal game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Raiders had five hits and took advantage of seven Roselle Park errors on the day. Julia DiGiacomo went 2-for-3 and scored to runs. Quinn Kekelis had a single and 2 RBI. Lexi Brunetto and Angie DiGiacomo also singled .
Roselle Park's Madison Hummel, who went the distance while yielding just one earned run and striking out nine. She also walked four and hit a batter in the loss. Cardenas walked one and struck out three for the Raiders to take the win.
Tuesday: Scotch Plains-Fanwood pounds Benedictine, 25-10
Quinn Kekelis went 4-for-5 with 2 home runs and 9 RBI to lead the Raiders over Benedictine, 25-10. Michaela Sullivan also homered while driving in four. Julia DiGiacomo homered and drove in three in the lopsided, non-tournament victory.
Amanda Venezia benefited from the run support to get the win. Jessica Waltsak relieved and finished the game.
