SPF 12U Summer Travel Team Advances to Championship Game

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The 12U Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders baseball team defeated the Springfield Minutemen, 13-7, at Memorial Park on Monday to advance to the New Providence Green League 12U Championship Game. 

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the 12U Raiders will host Basking Ridge Black at Memorial Field in Scotch Plains for the league championship.

During Monday evening’s game, Springfield scored three runs in the first inning capitalizing on a SPF error and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, plating one more run in the top of the second inning.

The Raiders responded in the bottom of the second with a five-run outburst starting off with a lead-off single by Mike Besante. Gus Barco then doubled, scoring Besante and Jayson Williams reached on a Minuteman error scoring Barco. Dominic Romano singled scoring Williams followed by a run scoring double by Tommy Glastal.  Brendan Sosinski grounded out scoring Glastal and the Raiders took a 5-4 lead at the end of the second. 

In the top of the third inning Springfield scored two runs to regain a 6-5 lead.  In the bottom of the third inning Matt Delgado singled, followed by a walk by Nolan O’Connor setting the stage for a 3-run towering blast to left field by Mike Besante that sailed over the top of the left field foul pole to give the Raiders an 8-6 lead.

When the Raiders came up in the bottom of the fifth inning, Colin Fitzgerald started a two-out rally working a walk, followed by another walk by Matt Delgado. Raider coach Mike Ridge then pulled a double steal with Fitzgerald and Delgado putting both runners in scoring position which O’Connor capitalized on with a 2-run double.  Besante added his own RBI double to deep CF and Jake Hahn singled driving in Besante. Barco added the final SPF run by doubling to score Hahn putting up five more runs taking a commanding 13-6 lead.

Joe Barge provided solid defense up the middle for the Raiders helping pitchers Tommy Glastal, who recorded the win, with four solid innings allowing only three earned runs on five hits and striking out three; and Dominic Romano, who pitched the remaining two innings keeping the Minutemen hitless with one strikeout.

With Monday’s victory, the SPF 12U Raiders improved to 11-3 in the New Providence Green League.
