SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders 13U baseball team defeated the Caribbean All-Stars of Perth Amboy, 6-3, in the opening round of the USABL playoffs Thursday night at Union County Vo-Tech.

Zack Staggard gave the Raiders a 4-1 lead before anyone was out in the bottom of the first inning with a long grand slam to center field. Staggard also came in to pitch 1 2/3 innings to get the save in relief of winning pitcher Jason Trivisonno, who pitched the first 3 1/3 innings of the rain-shortened contest.

Dylan Fei and Andy Kipp delivered RBI singles for SPF's other two runs, Tommy Schmidt contributed offensively, and fine defensive plays were turned in by Raiders Tommy Wright, Matthew Bender, Jake DeGaetano, Gio Massa and Fei, who had an outstanding game in center field. Nick Evangelista, who turned in a gold-glove performance in right field last week against Baseball Warehouse, excelled behind the plate against the Caribbean All-Stars.

The SPF 13U team, coached by Josh Decker, will play in the league semifinals early next week, with the day and opponent to be determined.
