SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - Here is the roundup of Scotch Plains-Fanwood varsity sports action for the week of Oct. 7-12.

Boys Soccer: The Scotch Plains-Fanwood (SPF) boys’ soccer team won both its games this week improving their record to 9-3-1. Their first win came against Elizabeth on Thursday 4-3. The Raiders fell behind 3-1 at halftime. In the second half of the game, Scotch Plains scored three goals in the last 18 minutes of the game, headlined by 2 goals by Captain Christian Zazzali, one of them being the game winning goal. Jake Longo and Justin Rodriquez scored the other two goals for the Raiders. James Murphy led the game in assists with two. SPF traveled to Westfield on Saturday looking for revenge from their 1-0 double overtime loss to Westfield earlier in the season. The Raiders beat Westfield 1-0 with Rodriquez scoring a goal in the first half off an assist from David Valian. Scotch Plains will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they travel to Union on October 17.

Girls Soccer: The Raiders went 2-0-1 this week keeping their undefeated season intact. The girls’ soccer team tied against Westfield on Tuesday 1-1. Katie Harper scored the game tying goal in the last 30 seconds of the game off an assist from Alyssa Riporti to make the score 1-1. The score would remain unchanged throughout the overtime period and would result in the Raider’s first tie of the season. On Thursday, the team defeated Union 3-0 at home. Tori Baliatico, Katherine Cunningham, and Kelly Yeager each scored a goal for SPF. Baliatico and Sarah DiIorio each had an assist in the game. On Saturday, the team played in their first county game against Oak Knoll and won 4-0. Baliatico and Kayla Diggs each scored a goal in the game. Cunningham led the Raiders with two goals and Jodie Cornwell and Yeager each had an assist. The win pushed the team into the county semifinals. With the two wins and one tie this week, the Raiders record is now 12-0-1 and will play at home against New Providence on October 15.

Football: The Scotch Plains football team won on Friday against North Plainfield, 27-12. Quarterback Emendo Thomas scored the game’s first touchdown on a 17-yard run to give the Raiders the early lead. North Plainfield struck back with a 31 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to make it 6-6. In the second quarter Thomas ran for another 17 yard touchdown making the score 13-6. The Raiders scored again this time Thomas finding tight end Ryan Jensen for an eight yard touchdown giving SPF a 20-6 lead. North Plainfield scores on a six yard pass to make the score at halftime 20-12. Neither team scored in the third quarter but in the fourth quarter, Thomas ran for a one yard touchdown making the score 27-12. With the win, the team’s record improved to 2-3. Scotch Plains plays on their homecoming game against Cranford on October 19.

Girls Gymnastics: The girls’ gymnastics team went 2-0 this week. On Tuesday, the Raiders defeated Cranford 104.875 to 103.075. Abby Spector won the Vault for the Raiders with a score of 8.95. Spector also won the Uneven Bars with a score of 8.85. Kacie Bumiller took the Floor Exercise with a score of 9.225. Thursday the team traveled to Summit and beat them 107.5 to 106.3. Bumiller this time took the Vault for SPF with a score of 9.5. Spector for the second straight meet won the Uneven Bars with a score of 9.025. She also won the Floor Exercise for SPF scoring a 9.375. The team’s record after this week is 7-4 and will compete at South Plainfield on October 15.

Girls Tennis: This week, the girls’ tennis team went 0-2. The team lost to Columbia on Tuesday, not winning any of their matches. Unfortunately, the team faced the same result at Summit on Wednesday. The team’s record is 2-11 but will look to rebound after their two losses against Gov. Livingston on October 15.

Girls Volleyball: The Raiders went 2-0 this week extending their win streak to seven matches.  Tuesday the team defeated Johnson in straight sets. Isabella Krempa led the team with six aces and 11 assists. Brooke Enners led the team with ten kills and eight digs. On Thursday, the team traveled to Rahway and won in straight sets. Krempa again led the team in aces with five and led the team in assists with 12. Enners led the team in kills with 11 and Shannon Rielly led the team in digs with 14. The volleyball team has not dropped a set since defeating New Providence on September 26. With the two wins this week, the team now has an 11-2 record and their next match will be against Summit on October 15.

Boys Cross Country: SPF continued their great season defeating Plainfield on Tuesday 15-48. The Raiders swept the first six places with Joe Dzuback finishing first with a time of 17 minutes and 26 seconds. Alex Livernois finished second with a time of 17 minutes and 27 seconds. Brian Deutschmeister finished third with a time of 18 minutes and 11 seconds. This was the team’s last dual meet for the season and finished with a record of 4-1.

Girls Cross Country: The girls cross country team defeated Plainfield 19-41 on Tuesday in their final dual meet of the season. Kailyn Reilly took first with a time of 21 minutes and 37 seconds. Leah Womelsdorf finished second with a time of 22 minutes and nine seconds. Noelle Alber came in third with a time of 22 minutes and 56 seconds. The team’s record is 3-2 and this meet was their last dual meet of the season.
