Swimming: FSPY "Black" Girls Dominated at First Dual Meet vs. Ridgewood

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The FSPY “Black” Girls team opened up their fall dual-meet schedule on Saturday Oct.28 by cruising past the Ridgewood Breakers. FSPY looked strong as they placed in top 3 in every event.

In the opening event, FSPY took both 1st and 2nd in the Individual Medley for the 10U, 11/12 and 13/14 age groups. Gina Yip and Phoebe Kaplan touched ahead of all Ridgewood swimmers for the 9/10s, while Billie Rose Sherratt and Ellie Moose did the same for the 11-12s. Abby DiGiorgio and Brianna Dy got 1st and 2nd in the 13/14 200IM race while Darlene Fung took first for the 15-18s.

The FSPY 8/unders claimed the top spots in all four of their races. Janice Yip touched first in Back and Fly while Fiona Rovito won the Breast and Vivian Yu cruised in the 25 Free. The young swimmers also took home two 2nd place spots  (Yu in Breast and Sophie Isleta in Free) and earned two 3rd place spots (Amy Jiang in Back and Rovito in Fly).

The 9/10 year olds were equally impressive, as both Laura Kim (50 Free, 50 Breast) and G. Yip (100 IM, 50 Fly) took 1st in each of their events, Kaplan took 1st and 2nd in her two (100 IM, 50 Back) while both Elle Cadigan (50 Free, 50 Breast) and Kayla Kerr (50 Back and 50 Fly) claimed two 2nd -place finishes. Sophia Yalcin took 2nd place in the 50 Back.

The 11/12s also came out on top in 3 of their races. Billie Rose Sherratt, Victoria Gee and Katherine Li took the top honors in the Back, Breast and Fly races, respectively. Ellie Moose claimed a 3rd place spot in Breast while Naomi Maurer and Haley Oliver took 2nd and 3rd in the 11/12 50 Free.

Leading the 13/14 charge were Abby DiGiorgio (100 Breast), Chloe Howell (100 Free) and Fiona Strout (100 Back) as each placed first in their events. Also placing for the 13-14s were Nicole Ben-David (2nd/100 Fly; 3rd/100 Breast); Isabella Betman (3rd/100 Fly), Brianna Dy (2nd/100 Breast; 2nd/200 IM), Abby Ryan (2nd/100 Back; 3rd/100 Breast) and Strout (3rd/100 Free). Howell and Strout both touched in under a minute in the 100 Free.

The 15-18 year old swimmers were not to be outdone as Monika Burzynski (1st 100 Fly; 2nd 100 Free), Darlene Fung (1st 200 IM; 2nd 200 Back), Rachel Maizes (1st 200 Breast), Marlise Moesch (1st 100 Free; 1st 200 Back) each scorched the waters of Ridgewood.  Adding to the group’s accomplishments was Anna Dunchus with a 2nd place in the 200 Breast.

 In an exciting end to their first dual meet of the season, the FSPY Girls “A” Freestyle Relay teams placed first in all age groups, the 8 under (Yip, Isleta, Jiang, Yu) 9/10 (Yip, Cadigan, Kaplan, Kim), 11/12 (Maurer, Li, Oliver and Sherratt), 13/14 (Pina, Strout, Ben-David, Howell) and 15-18 (Moesch, Burzynski, R. Maizes, Fung) events. 

All in all it was a great day for FSPY and well worth the 30 mile drive up the Parkway!
