What would possess a 58-year-old, slightly overweight and out of shape college professor to suddenly decide to set out to hike the 72 miles of the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey by himself? Come to Scotch Plains Public Library to hear Dr. Raymond Frey recount his journey through New Jersey’s last great mountain wilderness—as well as the history, geography, and nature along the trail in a part of the state that very few New Jersey residents have ever seen. He will speak at 7PM on Thursday, January 30.

Dr. Raymond Frey is one of the leading scholars of New Jersey history.  He has written two textbooks on the state—New Jersey, A Journey of Discovery, and New Jersey, Our Home.  He has contributed to the New Jersey Encyclopedia, and regularly lectures on New Jersey history around the state. He is a Professor of History at Centenary College in Hackettstown, where he has taught since 1990.  He is the recipient of three major awards for teaching excellence—the Evening Division Teaching Award from Pace University, the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching from Centenary, and the Award for Teaching New Jersey History from the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance.  In 2006, he was the Gates-Ferry Foundation Distinguished Lecturer at Centenary.

Registration for this program is recommended.  Interested participants can sign up for the presentation by calling the library at (908) 322-5007, ext. 204, by email to library@scotlib.org,  or via the Events tab on the library web site,  www.scotlib.org.
Scotch Plains Public Library programs are free and open to the public. The Scotch Plains Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue, one block from Park Avenue in the center of town.
