Teens Learn Non-Profit Board Functions, Raise Funds for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Overlook


SUMMIT, NJ -- Philanthropy took on new meaning for teens from the Overlook community as they learned how a nonprofit board functions, worked through the grant process, and raised funds for their chosen cause. Student representatives from 13 area high schools served as members of the Overlook Foundation Junior Board for the 2016-17 school year, which culminated in their awarding of a $40,000 grant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Overlook Medical Center.

Accepting on behalf of the NICU were (rear left) Dr. Gaines Mimms and Dr. Denise Hassinger, joined by Junior Board members Mary Riccio, New Providence High School (HS); Jane Rasweiler, Summit HS; Abhay Bhandari of Short Hills, Montclair Kimberley Academy; Rachel Miller of South Orange, Newark Academy; Corey Vita of Denville, Oratory Prep; Elyse DiCesare of Basking Ridge, Kent Place; Jared Lefkort of Short Hills, Pingry; Sarah Pishko, Chatham HS; Sydney Von Oehsen, Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS; Brent Faecher, Governor Livingston HS; Emily Blumstein, Millburn HS; Patrick Henry of Berkeley Heights, Delbarton; and (front) co-chairs Kiran Damodaran of Chatham, Newark Academy, and Logan Richardson, Chatham HS, who served on the 2015-16 board and returned to lead this year's group.
