Tennis: Scotch Plains-Fanwood Loses a Squeaker to Mendham

FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys varsity tennis team lost a 3-2 decision to Mendham at La Grande Park on Wednesday.  

The Minutemen put up the first point of the match at 1st doubles, as William Schrum and Nicholas Signorelli cruised 6-2, 6-1 over the Raiders' Neel Thombre and Nirmit Damania.
The match was knotted at 1-all when freshman Brett Strug defeated Luke Potash 7-5, 6-1.  Mendham would go back in front 2-1 thanks to a 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 triumph at 2nd doubles over the Raiders duo of sophomore Ryan Cleary and freshman Brian Huang.
SPF's 2nd singles player, Ewan Jones, won a hard fought 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) battle over Max Werner square things at 2-2 leaving the 1st singles contest as the deciding match.
Raiders' co-captain, Brandon Glickstein, won the first set 6-3.  However, Mendham's Matt Hopkins rallied to take the final 2 sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure the split decision for the Minutemen.

"We did some really good things out there today vs. one of the better teams in the state," SPFHS Coach Gary Wasserman said. "Ewan and Brett picked up hard fought wins in their singles matches, and we had 2 other matches go the distance."
