Thank You to the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Memorial Day Parade Committee

Dear Editor:

A lot of hard work and dedication by the 2016 Scotch Plains–Fanwood Memorial Day Parade and Concert Committee was rewarded Memorial Day weekend when the predicted heavy rains held off and allowed our community to hold its annual Memorial Day concert on Sunday and parade on Monday.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee, and Chairman Ralph Checchio for their unwavering commitment to preserving the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending our Nation and for honoring all those who have served both past and present to protect our liberties and the freedoms we enjoy.

Both events were moving tributes, our Sunday evening concert featuring patriotic songs by the Westfield Community Band was held in loving memory of Donald Wussler, a Korean War veteran and Purple Heart Recipient who was a pillar of our veterans’ organizations and our entire community for many, many years.

Blessed with sunshine, Monday’s parade was very well attended and highlighted by the moving words of Grand Marshal Joe McCourt. A multiple medal recipient for his service in Vietnam, Joe reminded us all how important it is that we never forget the sacrifices made by those who serve as well as their families, reflecting on the sentiment that that freedom isn’t free and that our Nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.

Veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan attended our events, and we want to thank them once again for their service to our country and for sharing in our remembrances. Sincere thanks also go out to our veterans’ organizations – the American Legion Post 209, the Scotch Plains – Fanwood Veterans of Foreign Wars {VFW} Memorial Post 10122, and as well to all those volunteers who marched in the Parade that helped make our Memorial Day tribute such a success.

Finally, I want to extend a profound thank you to all those that lined the streets to show their patriotism and gratitude to those who have answered the call to duty.  Your presence was heartfelt. You all confirmed once again that which makes our two communities a great place to live.

On behalf of the Scotch Plains – Fanwood 2016 Memorial Day Parade and Concert Committee thank you for coming out and your ongoing support. May God Bless you, and the United States of America.

Kevin Glover
Mayor, The Township of Scotch Plains

What Is Your Bottom Line?

This week's Parshah (Torah reading) is the Parshah of Pinchas the Zealot: the courageous young priest who stood up against idolatry and immorality and, in the end, saved Israel from a devastating plague.

While Pinchas' radical response made him a hero worthy of having a Torah section named after him, we wouldn't necessarily suggest to our children ...
