Three Raider Wrestlers Win District Titles as SPFHS Finishes Second in Tournament

WESTFIELD, NJ -- Led by three district champions, Scotch Plains-Fanwood wrestlers finished second to Cranford in the NJSIAA District 11Tournament  Final Round on Sat, Feb. 21, 2015 at Westfield High School.

"Three of our guys won out today, so it was definitely a good day," said coach TJ Gavor.

Brian Lapham , a 145 lb. senior, became the Raiders' winningest wrestler when he won his 126th match in the final round to repeat as District champion. Lapham, who will wrestle at Bucknell next year,  pinned his opponent in both semifinal and final rounds. He was also a Union County Tournament champion.

J.T. Beirne, a 138 lb. senior, scored pins in three matches to win his first district title after finishing as the runner up last year.

Alex Mirabella, a 195 lb. senior,  who was also the Union County Tournament champ  and John Goles Tournament champion this year, pinned Linden’s Khalil Burns to win his second District title.

"I've been wrestling with these guys forever -- JT since second grade," said Alex Mirabella. "It's great to be able to wrestle with your best friends on the team."

Final Round Results:

  • 120 lbs: Tom DiGiovanni (Cranford) beat Jack Cannon (SPF) by a 9-0 major decision
  • 126 lbs: Chris Scorese (Cranford) topped Jashmar Philippe (SPF) 9-0.
  • 138 lbs: J.T. Beirne (SPF) pinned Dave Busch (Cranford) at 3:09
  • 145 lbs: Brian Lapham (SPF) won by a technical fall (5-0) over Brian McGovern (Cranford) at 5:26
  • 182 lbs: Niko Cappello (Cranford) decisioned Jaylen Bryant (SPF) 9-3
  • 195 lbs: Alex Mirabella (SPF) won by a technical fall over Khalil Burns (Linden) at 1:31

Team results were:

  1. Cranford: 203
  2. SPF: 169
  3. Rahway: 122
  4. Linden: 118
  5. Westfield: 97
  6. Elizabeth: 86
  7. Brearley: 60

In total, seven Raider wrestlers qualified for the Region III Tournament at Union High School next weekend.

Teens Invited to Participate in Coding and Bi-Weekly After-School Club at the Scotch Plains Public Library
