SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Jim Weyand, a 2012 graduate of Union Catholic, was named the Head Athletic Trainer at his alma mater on Wednesday.
Weyand, who graduated from Binghampton University with a B.A. in Physics and a Minor in Health and Wellness Studies and received a Master of Science in Athletic Training from Seton Hall University, has built a very impressive resume in a short time.

Over the past two years, Weyand has served as an Athletic Training Student at Seton Hall University, The Lawrenceville School, Union Catholic, and this past school year at Princeton University. He is excited about the opportunity to work at Union Catholic

"When I found out there was an opportunity to work at Union Catholic as the Athletic Trainer, I was pretty excited,'' said Weyand, who lives in North Plainfield. "I thought it would be something I'd definitely want the opportunity to do because when I was here as a student there wasn't an Athletic Trainer. So for me to come back here after seeing what Chris Esperon and Katie (Lynes) did here as trainers, I see this is a big opportunity to grow not just as a trainer, but also in the sense that I want to build something for the school and work on student clubs so they have an idea what a health professional does. And I want to make Union Catholic better in the sports medicine program''

Weyand already has strong relationships with most of the UC coaches.

"I was able to establish a good professional relationship with the coaches when I did my clinical rotation here, so they were able to get a glimpse of what I could do,'' said Mr. Weyand. "From here on out I'm looking forward to building those relationship with the coaches so that I am the person they tell their athletes to go see to get things looked at so they don't have to worry about it. I want to give them that peace of mind so they can just coach. I'm really excited to get started.''

Dave Luciano, Union Catholic's newly appointed Athletic Director, who took over for the legendary Jim Reagan Sr., is very excited about the addition of Weyand.
"It been a fun process to see Jim grow over the years from a former student here to when he interned at Seton Hall University and here at UC, and since he left here in 2017 he's grown so much more in the last year and a half when he had the opportunity to work with Princeton University,'' said  Luciano

"Jim is going to bring excitement and energy to our athletic department,'' said Luciano. "He's really going to buy into our system and be a pleasure to work with, and I think the kids here are going to love him. Not only does he bring excitement and energy to what he does, but he's also an extremely intelligent young man. I think it's going to be fun for the kids, not only when they are injured and getting healthy, but I think he will do a great job with prevention of injury, and I think he will do a great job of implementing new styles of treatment.

"He's definitely going to be cutting edge, and the thing that really excited me about Jimmy was the fact that what we see in the methods he uses, he's going to work so hard that in five years he's going to find the newest methods to use. He will continue to evolve in his role here, and I think he's a perfect fit for the type of school that we are where we continue as a school community to evolve with the times. I think Jim will jump right into that process and be a great addition to our athletic program.''
