Union Catholic Hurdler Will Be Youngest U.S. Track Athlete at Rio Olympics

EUGENE, OR -- Sydney McLaughlin a member of the Class of 2017 at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, set a high school and new world junior record in the women's 400 hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials. McLaughlin ran the race in 54.15 to break the world junior record, which stood for a decade. 

The 16-year-old will be the youngest track athlete to compete for Team USA in the Olympics in Rio. Her brother, Taylor McLaughlin, competed to make the U.S. Olympic team but had to withdraw in the semi-finals after an injury. Taylor is an alumnus of Union Catholic (2015) and a star for the University of Michigan.

"All the pressure I put on myself," McLaughlin, a resident of Dunellen, said in her post-race interview on NBC, which will air the games from Brazil next month. In June, was honored as the Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year!

Friends, fellow students, alumni and staff of Union Catholic packed the Stage House in downtown Scotch Plains for a viewing party to watch the teenage runner make history.
