Union Catholic senior Lauren Guerra, who comes from a musical family, has a leading role in the Spring Musical at Union Catholic. She was born with music in her blood.

Her father, Manuel, is a drummer who once had his own band, and her older brother, Andrew, a 2011 graduate of Union Catholic, sings and plays the guitar. So it was only natural for Guerra, now a senior at Union Catholic, to follow in their footsteps.

“With my dad having been in a band when he was younger, and my brother involved in music, I kind of grew up in that environment,’’ said Guerra, who lives in Warren. “Music has always been in my family. I started singing when I was around two and have been singing ever since. There were times when I’d play with my dad at festivals and things like that, and my brother and I often sang together at restaurants and festivals.’’

Guerra’s singing talent has made her a big star on the stage at Union Catholic, and has also landed her numerous high profile appearances performing the National Anthem in front of huge crowds.

Guerra, who has sung the National Anthem at multiple Somerset Patriots baseball games and at a New Jersey Devils hockey game at the Prudential Center, will once again take center stage at the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade this Saturday, which is dedicated to the catholic schools of Union County.

Guerra, also a talented pianist, will sing the National Anthem this Saturday morning at St. Patrick’s Church in Elizabeth, and will then sing the Irish Anthem at the start of the parade in Union.

Guerra has sung at the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the past, but it’s still something she’s very excited about.

“It’s really exciting,’’ said Guerra, a member of UC’s Performing Arts Company. “It’s still something kind of new for me, but it’s a great experience. I had to learn the Irish Anthem, but it’s always fun and exciting to try new things. I enjoy being able to do what I love and share it with people that enjoy it too. When you do something that you are passionate about it gives you such a rush. It’s so exciting.’’’

Speaking of exciting, Guerra is thrilled to have landed a leading role as Nina in Union Catholic’s Spring Musical, “In the Heights’, which will have five shows beginning on March 31 at Union Catholic.

“I can’t wait,’’ Guerra said of the musical. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s my last year here, so it’s kind of bittersweet. It’s been a great experience and I’m going to miss it.”
Guerra, who played Cassie in the Fall Play “Rumors’’ and performed "I Feel the Earth Move'' by Carole King from Beautiful on Cabaret Night at UC earlier this year, has been one of the lead vocalists at UC for the last couple years.

“It’s an honor,’’ said Guerra, who said she’ll attend Fairleigh Dickinson University in the fall and be part of the theatre program there. “I love being able to represent the school that I love. I am thankful for all the opportunities that Union Catholic has given me, and the chance to branch out and do all the things that I didn’t think I’d be able to do with something that I love to do.’’

For 54 years, Union Catholic High School has earned its reputation as one of New Jersey's foremost Catholic secondary schools. For information, visit

I am saddened and angered at the violence that took place at Art All Night (in Trenton) early this morning, and I am praying for all of the families involved, but, as I’ve said before, that’s not enough. After every shooting, we talk about motive, mental illness and every other distraction from the real problem — guns.
