SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Audrey Davis, who will be a senior at Union Catholic in the fall, has founded and organized a club for her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
The name of the club is the A.W.A.R.E Club-which stands for Active Walking and Respite Exercise Club. It's a walking club for teens and young adults with special needs from ages 13-21.
The free club, sponsored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Union County Office for People with Special Needs, is for special needs teens and young adults who are interested in becoming more active, and enjoy the outdoors and having fun with new friends. There will also be fun activities such as yoga and arts and crafts.
The events will take place every other Saturday this summer with the first walk scheduled for Saturday, June 30th. There are six events scheduled for Oak Ridge Park in Clark that will run from 9-11 a.m. (June 30, July 14, July 28, Aug. 11, Aug. 25, and Sept. 1. And there will be one event at Echo Lake Park in Mountainside from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sept 15.
Please note that this is a drop-off event in order to provide respite to parents and caregivers.
Davis, the President of UC's C.R.A.Y.O.N. Club (Community Raising Autism Yielding Opportunity Now), said that volunteers and participants for the A.W.A.R.E. Club are needed.
