SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Union Catholic’s Catherine McGovern was honored on Wednesday morning with the Eldon M. Hammeke Scholarship award.

The scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Hammeke by his wife, Grace, and is supported by the Knights of Columbus Summit Council 783, of which Mr. Hammeke was an active member. The award is presented every year to one current UC freshman student and is renewable for the recipient's remaining years at Union Catholic.

McGovern, who lives in Westfield, was chosen based on her successful integration into Union Catholic, good grades, and her response to the call to "become all God calls you to be" at UC.

McGovern said she’s honored to receive the scholarship and that her first couple months at Union Catholic have been great.

“I feel almost speechless,’’ McGovern said during a special breakfast at UC to honor her achievement. “It so amazing to be chosen for this scholarship. I feel so honored and this is such a special day. It’s definitely something I will be reminded of every day. I’m so thankful and grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given here at Union Catholic. Everyone here already feels like family and it’s only been two months. Everyone at UC is so warm and welcoming. I just love it so much here.’’
